Website Optimisation Tips

It an obvious thing to say, that if you have a website you want more internet traffic. In general terms there are three major ways of achieving this:-

  • Direct Internet Traffic - Obtains your website address from a business card or company brochure.
  • Referred Internet Traffic - Clicks on a link from and on-line directory or supplier
  • Search Engine Traffic - From a search engine, such as Google and you appear in the search engine results page. (SERP)

The following page focuses on the third option, search engine traffic, and discusses how you can increase your chances of being found on a top ranked search engine results page position. The success of your website as a marketing tool is highly dependant upon this traffic.

1. Quality Content

A pretty website, with lots of graphic or flash might look good when you eventually find it, but the lack of text will not work in its favour. Search engines like Google, Yahoo and Live are spidering search engines and as a result look only at the text on your website pages. However, having words is also not enough, the content needs to be rich and of good quality so that the search engine can build a 'picture' of website pages, determining what the site is about and if its relevant a users search phrase. So the first stage when looking to optimise your site is to create good copy, which is relevant to the keywords you have targeted. This creates a good landing page for your visitors.

2. Link Popularity

Search engines such as Google consider links with other website vitally important and having good quality links with increase your overall ranking. In order to create these links you need to contact other quality websites and ask if they will link to you. In general this involves creating a reciprocal link back to their site. When a link is created back to your site the text with the link is also important as this impacts on your overall theme. As an example, a plumbing company called “J Smith & Son” would benefit more with “Best Plumbers in AnyTown – click here” rather than “J Smith & Son – click here”. This is especially so if “Best Plumber in AnyTown” is one of your keywords for the landing page. Be careful when selecting or creating links with certain website such as link farms as these can have a negative effect on your sites ranking. In general though more website on the internet pointing to you the better.

3. Title Bar

The title bar is the text shown as the top of the internet browser. If you look at the top of this browser you will see “Website Promotion Tips | Website Pages | How to Optimise Your Website”. This is the title text for this website page. When your site appears in the search engine results page, it is your Title that is shown to the user. Be sure to create a good quality title, relevant to your website page, showing your keywords. The title bar is an important part of your website optimisation and a key element in your overall search engine ranking.

4. Keyword Density

Having selected your keywords that have a high amount of internet traffic for your website pages you need to ensure that the density is right. In short, density is the number of times your keyword appears as a percentage of the words on the page. Too many will be considered spamming, and you may be penalised by the search engines; too few and your page won't be considered relevant. As a guide, somewhere between 1% and 4%, however, the search engine algorithms may change.

5. Meta Tags

If you look at the page source for a website page you will see at the top a number of lines with the word meta in them. These are the meta tags for the website page. In years gone by, these were an important part of a search engines criteria, however this is no longer the case. The description tag is generally used by the search engines when displaying your link in the search engine results page. You should therefore take the time to write a brief description of your site to increase the appeal to potential visitors.
